IMovie '11 How do I recover a project that appears within the IMovie Projects folder but does not show in the Project Library?

I have had my MBP for just over 3 months now! Yes, I made the switch and up until now I have been quite happy.

I now have my Time Capsule, Apple TV running and am generally getting used to life as a Mac user.............even bought Aperture and loaded all the family photos. Now time to make some Travel movies.

I have been working on a particular IMovie project for a few weeks now. Size is 365MB. Yesterday I closed IMovie and when accessing later that project is not available in the Project Library window. It does appear in the IMovie Projects folder but I cannot open it. I have copied the file to DVD just in case. All up I have 4 Projects, the other 3 are practice files, smaller but they do appear in the Project Library.

I have scoured the bulletin boards and tried many suggested fixes to no avail. Main suggestion was to remove the following files from Library/Preferences

  1. com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
  2. com.apple.iApps.plist

However, this did not sort out my problem. In the end I put back the original files.

Does anyone have a straightforward fix for my problem or is this one of those ongoing issues that that needs Apple's attention.

After all the file is there with the others. They are available.

I realise that I can restore from Time Capsule but I am missing the last three days thanks to 'drop out'.

Thanks.......

That's very strange. I've had exactly the same problem. See my first post in the following thread for more details:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4748933?tstart=0

Sorry I can't help solve this. It's very frustrating to find, after closing iMovie, that a project has gone missing from the Project Library (although it's still listed in the Finder).

I'm beginning to think that an update to either iMovie or Mountain Lion may be the culprit. I've been using iMovie in all its iterations since 2001 and haven't seen this problem before (although the Events/Projects style only started with iMovie '08 of course).

Following your post I checked my IMovies, first time for a while. My OS is 10.8.4 and IMovie 9.0.9.

I have three large files about 300Mb each. Two are OK but the third will now not play any embedded music, although it will play embedded sound effects OK. Restored that particular file from my Time Capsule from various pasts but same problem each time.

I will look into this further when I have time, hopefully there is a simple solution.

Hoping!

Referring my earlier post June 22, 2013 I located 2 music files in my iMovie with a yellow triangle at beginning of each track. I deleted these from the iMovie, opened iTunes and played both tracks through to ensure they were OK. Then reinserted both back into my movie and all fixed.

Don't know what the problem was but files must have become corrupted somehow.

I would also mention that after I deleted the two yellow triangle music files from the movie the others/remaining songs were able to be heard!

Well, it's been a month now since hasburyhughesy announced here that there is a new version of iMovie out. Does anyone have any results one way or the other? I'm still on iMovie 9.0.4 on OS 10.6.8, but I'm curious as to what I have to look forward to should I decide to upgrade. Thanks!

Hi betaneptune. I went ahead and installed the update because I was also having problems with iMovie running very slowly. Since updating both my OS and version of iMovie, I've not had any more problems. I'm not sure how much of a coincidence this is or not, but it 'seems' to have correcting things. I have created at least a dozen more projects now for work and have had no more disappearing movies.

Glad to hear you were able to solve your problem.

I had a similar problem where a particular music track suddenly disappeared from all iMovie projects that were using it. It caused all sorts of other problems. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4999564 for details.

It turned out that the problem was caused by my running of the "'Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Music"' function, which rearranged the iTunes files and folders.

I copied the track back to the place iMovie thought it should be, and the problem was fixed!

How can one reasonably use iMovie on something as small as an iPhone, anyway?

The iOS version is very basic - nothing like iMovie '11 for the Mac. It's quite good for trimming video clips and adding music and titles. It's surprising the results you can achieve when producing short movies with iMovie for iOS on the iPhone (or iPad - even better).

Hi George

Welcome to the club.

Hope you had your project backed up and you can therefore restore it!!!

Otherwise a repeat performance could be needed. Read this discussion from the start and you will get the drift.

I have not had the problem again but I now have the situation where the new iMovie update does not upgrade all my projects and events. As a result I have stayed with the older version but now I cannot get all my songs to run - in either version - and they dont have the yellow triangle either.

Something for another day.

I wish you a good outcome with your problem.
