Iphone 5 wont restore error -1

Hi all

I tried updating to iOS 6.1 the other day and the iphone went into reveovery mode. Have tried to restore but am given the error code -1.

I have tried all the troubleshooting steps including putting the phone into DFU mode, updating itunes, disabling my anti virus, redownloading the ios IPSW and checking the windows hosts file. I have tried different USB ports on my PC, another PC and just tried on a mate's PC today still being given the -1 error.

Im not worried about losing data because i backed up right before trying to update the OS.

Have just got off the phone with Optus (my service provider in Australia) and they have offered to replace the iphone if i go into the shop tomorrow but wouldnt the iPhone 5 come with ios 6.0 as stock? The first thing i will do is try to update it to iOS 6.1 but am worried i will get the same -1 error code and then ill be back to where i am now.

Anyone else have this problem and been able to fix it or anything else i can try?

Hi bagerkeon,

Here is a clip from an Apple support article on this error:

Error 1 or -1

This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

I have uninstalled my security software (ESET Nod32 Antivirus) but am still having the same issue.

There is one thing i forgot to mention, when i complete the network connectivity tests / diagnostics within itunes it shows that a secure link to the itunes store has failed. However i can actually browse the store through itunes, and when trying to update, itunes successfully verifys the iOS 6.1 IPSW before the restoration. I have also disabled windows firewall as itunes suggests but still get the error.

Being a fairly new iphone is this likely to happen again if i do go through witht the replacement iphone and try to update to iOS 6.1 tomorrow?

Well, since we are not sure what it causing it, not sure if it has anything to do with the phone at all....

Are you running the latest version of iTunes? If not, download it, and try again....🙂

Otherwise, see what the Genius Bar has to say - maybe they will be able to troubleshoot this. If nothing else, they should be able to confirm whether or not you have a phone issue....
