iMac
Yes but upgrade the RAM to 16 GB when you buy it. It cannot be upgraded down the road, also consider getting a Fusion HD.

It's been quite some time that I haven't done some video editing. My budget is tight and so how bad will the 8 gb i5 perform?
Thanks
Rendering will be slower, but then rendering takes forever no matter what..... I have 12 GB and it works well. It also depends on your processor - that is just as important. Also remember: HD videos - shot in 1080p - require an obscene amount of hard drive space; I've started to shoot in 720p because the files are much smaller and I couldn't tell the difference on my TV.
Remember, the new 21" is not user upgradeable anything, so whatever you pick, you're stuck with. I'd suggest taking a look at the refurb section of the Apple store: previous models at savings with a full warranty:

Note that the inventory changes continuously.
Thank you. The imac's are pretty expensive and so I did not want to spend more then 1500$ taxes included. So i5 8 gb should be ok with an external drive.
You're welcome - do take a look at the refurbs; I've purchased several and you get far more bang for your buck. Plus you could upgrade the RAM on those yourself at any time.
What do you think of MacBook Pro for movie editing?
As long as the processor and the RAM are fast and plenty, no problem. Oh, and no matter what you'd pick, make sure you not only have a large hard drive, but also keep this in mind: when rendering and encoding and burning video, you do need to have at least as much free space on the hard drive as your video project (example: my last 1 hour project wound up with about 150 GB of various files, so while working on it, I needed to make sure I have at least that much empty space available.
So I guess I better go with the 27 inch and add ram when possible since its easy to do. What about MacBook Pro the basic model? Any better than imac?
What you want is a solidly performing FAST processor and enough RAM. Personally, I don't think the "package" it comes in matters as much as those two. Check out some geekbench tests

I see mine is way down now (around 9000) - shouldn't have looked at that page...... 😢
I was at the apple store today and they told me that the i5, 8gb is sufficient for HD movie editing. I'm planning to make some small HD editing or from DV format of about 30-45 min. What do u think?
Personally, I'd go for an i7 and more than 8 GB RAM; with "DV format" you mean regular SD footage, not HiDef? Then an i5 and 8 GB should be fine. I shoot in HD, so the files are huge and take much more "horsepower" to process. I have the top of the line mid 2010 i7 2.93 GHz iMac with 12 GB and yes, it's faster than what I had previously, but I still walk away while it's rendering/encloding, so I'd like faster than what I have.
Most of my movies are in Sony DVC60PRL Mini DV Tape 60min Premium Data Cartridge, but now that I have an HD camcorder I just want to make sure I have enough horsepower....yet I don't want to spend more than 2000$
I just found a good deal. The new imac 21.5 inch, i5 with 8gb. 1000$. What do you think?
One more thing do you have a 512 video card
