I just purchased an Iphone 5 today from Verizon. The mute button is not working, the bell does not pop up on screen at all either. Tried lock+home , reset all settings, still no fix any ideas?

Go back to Verizon; preferably the store where you got it.
They should replace it with another - if they don't, demand they do.
