Magnetic function isn't working for iPad Smart Case

I've recently purchased a red colour iPad Smart Case for my iPad with Retina Display (4th Gen) from the Apple Store. However, I have enquiries and troubleshooting about the case:

• How do I activate the magnetic function on my iPad? Even the smart case is attached on the iPad, the tablet does not seem to recognize the case.
• Does the iPad smart case suppose to have magnets around the perimeter of the case? As the lid does not adhere when I close it.
