Upgrade to iOS 6.1 corrupt

My itunes suggested i upgraded to iOS 6.1, i clicked OK.

Duting the process itunes removed the usb driver for the iphone connection,

and now my phone is stuck with the picture of a usb cable and an arrow to connect to itunes.

(so now i'm also without a working phone and cannpt contact anyone ... grrr ...

The phone is obviously interrupted in the upgrading process and is now useless)


Itunes (newest version and already tried reinstalling) and windows 7 will now not recognize the iphone.

Have already tried removing all apple products and reinstalling, and also tried everything with the apple mobile support driver and service.


I simply cannot be the only one with this problem.

Last time i updated my old ihone 4 i had the same problem. windows and itunes unable to recognze my phone.

At that time i also tried everything (the official Apple site and troubleshooting is useless !!)

In fact each time i have upgraded the iOS on my iphones the itunes program has removed an otherwise working usb driver and replaced with something that doesn't work. I have to say Apple needs to be better at this !!


I remember i googled and found an answer having to do with installing some 3-party driver/solution regarding the usb connection between the iphone and the PC/windows7, but i can't remember what and how.

Please advice !

Ack. That one might be the root cause of the driver issue, too.


These aren't easy. But the following instructions are worth a shot:


Do another complete uninstall. Once everything is gone:


a. Launch regedit (Start >> Search Programs and Files >> type Regedit and open the regedit that comes up.)

b. Access the following Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData \S-1-5-18\Co mponents

c. Perform the following actions

i. Right Click on Components Folder

ii. Select Permissions

iii. Select Full Control and Read Permissions options

iv. Select Advanced Button

v. Select Owner Tab

vi. Select to Change Owner to the Administrators

vii. Check the option “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects”

viii. Select OK when prompted that it may not change all.

ix. Select Apply

x. Select Apply again

xi. Exit the Registry Editor

5) Reinstall Itunes

I tried your registry changes and reinstalled itunes.

It didn't help !


My problem is not that the apple mobile support driver is missing or corrupt.

It seems though that the driver from apple is not working.

(i have of course tried to restart the services)


The driver is listed under device manager as apple mobile device usb driver under

universal serial bus controller.


Under devices and printers it is listed under unspecified.

So it seems that windows doesn't know what it's supposed to do.


Please give me further advice.

(i still have a hard time understanding why everybody doesn't get the same error when trying to upgrade iOS to 6.1 on an iphone5, since I'm running of-the-shelf HW (i.e.: laptop from HP 64 bit, with windows 7))

Have you tried to Reset your iPhone while the USB Cable was plugged into your computer and your iPhone (even though your iPhone is not detected)? As a separate question, can you find anything in the iTunes Pull-Down Menus that may allow you to Download iOS 6.1 to a Device that you select (via your Computers Device List ...Unknown Device)? Do you have a small Pull-Down Box at the Top Right of your iTunes that can be toggled to your attached Device?

I have already tried several times to shutdown the iphone and restarting.

The iphone is obviously stuck in the middle of the upgrading process,

and i only get the picture with the cable and the itunes icon.

(so the idiotic itunes program has totally crashed my phone ... somebody should pay something for that !!)


I also tried a system restore to a date before itunes had a chance to **** up.

But it seems it also ****** up the usb software driver on the phone which connects to the pc.

I'm starting to get a little annoyed with Apple :-)


In my itunes program everything that has do with devices is greyed out

(obviously since the program can't detect anything, when the PC can't detect anything)


I appreciate your help but I've been working with PC's and computer networks for the past 20 years so i was hoping for someone either related to apple or anyone with experience in driver software to come forward.


Anyway ... thanx for your response (hopefully i'm not coming off as a *******, but i am however very angry with Apple at the moment)

I, too, have the same problem! I just downloaded a few new audio books to my desktop and plugged in my iPhone 5 (iOS 6.1) so I could copy them over, and it suddenly doesn't recognize my iPhone. I am livid. -Kathleen

Ok, I opened iTunes and then plugged in the iPhone. And it was recognized by iTunes. I was able to process the audio files as usual. My issue is solved, but I have no idea what others will do. 😟

Mine is still not working :-)


Does anyone know how to factory default/reset the iphone ?

Yesterday i was told that i shoud press and hold the home button and the on/off button for 30 sec.

I have tried this but still nothing happens ... The iphone is still stuck with the picture that says connect to itunes.

To factory reset your iPhone follow the steps below:

  1. From the iPhone 5 home screen, select Settings.
  2. Once inside the settings application tap General.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and select Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Finally, confirm that this is what you actually want to do by tapping Yes.
  6. Your iPhone 5 will now erase everything and reboot.

If you need to restore the iPhone to its original state the process requires iTunes. This can be useful for troubleshooting to see if a problem is hardware or software related. The process can also reset an iPhone for resale, wiping all personal data from the device.

Should you suspect a hardware issue with your iOS device, Apple will normally recommend a complete restore to see if this clears up the problem. You can save time when you go to the Apple store by trying a complete restore first. Restoring will update your iPhone firmware to the latest version.

If your iPhone is booting to a black screen you need to follow additional steps before restoring your iPhone. See these additional instructions by clicking here.

1. Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.
2. Make sure your iPhone is selected from the left menu in iTunes.

3. Click the Restore button in the center of the iTunes Summary tab.
4. You can choose to Back Up the contents of your iPhone to the computer.
5. iTunes will ask if you're ready to Restore the iPhone, this will wipe all of your data and settings from the device. Click Restore.

6. iTunes will download, prepare and restore the software on your iPhone. Do not unplug the iPhone from the computer during this process!
7. When finished, iTunes will ask if you want to restore from backup. Choose "Set up as a new iPhone" to start fresh with factory settings.
8. Enter a name for your iPhone and the process is complete.

My problem has been solved !


I apologize if I have been coming off as a grumpy old man :-)


I found my old search history from when i had the problem previously.

And i followed this link:

I installed the ifunbox for windows .... And after launching the program and waiting for about 10 seconds my iphone suddenly came to life (Yippiieee).

I have no idea why and how - but it worked.

(initially the ifunbox didn't detect anything, but somehow it managed to reset the connection between the iphone and the PC)


Hopefully in the future i may be able to assist someone with their problems.

You're so lucky to fix the issue with ifunbox.


I have the same problem with my The New Ipad (Ipad 3) when I tried to upgrade it from 5.1.1 to 6.1. The upgrading process went OK until it has the arrow with USB pointing to Itunes icon. I connect the IPad to my laptop (winXP) with the latest Itunes version installed, but everytime I tried to open Itunes, the program got crashed.


I followed your instruction to download and install ifunbox, but there is no mirracle happened as your case.


I also tried to connect my Iphone 4 with the Itunes on my laptop, it works fine. So I think the problem belongs to the IPad only.


Do anyone have the best solution for this issue?
