Pages is repeatedly getting hung up and won't open. Suggestions?

Can anyone help with managing Pages so it won't get hung up? I went to the Apple store a few days ago, and someong force quit it and restarted. I tried that with a general restart, but it still wouldn't open.

The number of documents has nothing to do with it, Pages is unaware of any unopened files.

What version of Pages do you have:

click on the Pages icon in the Applications folder > Menu > Get Info

You might not have updated it to the latest v4.3

Also it is possible you have a damaged preference file, font or font cache.

Try opening Pages from another User account.

I am having the same problem. I have successfully opened up Pages from another user.

I have the most up-to-date versions of OSX and Pages.

I can not close any of the open windows and there is a progress bar that is hung up not finishing its task. I have left it to its own devices overnight -- twice -- and still nothing. I even turned off sleep and shut down all of the other applications.

I have done a hard reset and even reset the PRAM.

I really need to be able to get back to work in Pages.

PLEASE HELP!!!

So we take it that you are actually talking about Pages '09. We presume you are using OSX 10.8.4?

Then there is a problem with:

1. The Word file. Can you open it with either TextEdit or LibreOffice?

and/or

2. Pages' .plist. Hold down the option key in Finder > Menu > Go > Library/Preferences

With Pages closed trash:

com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist

com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist.lockfile

Then restart Pages

3. You may also be having a problem with a font and need to verify/remove it in Font Book.

As for the Word file, I did open it in Preview... I got the information I needed and then deleted it.

I did your suggestion of deleting those files. I emptied trash.

I still have the problem with Pages being hung up and not allowing me to work. The blue candy cane continues to scroll. There is nothing on the box other than the candy cane scrolling.

I have set up a genius bar session tomorrow morning.

Any suggestions for my session with them?

Thank you.

If you are having problems in a particular User then it usually is the reources of that user ie the .plists and the fonts.

You haven't said how you had the problem again.

Did you attempt to open the same file again in Pages or did you first try to just open a clean Pages template?

As for the Genius Bar, just tell them everything, have the problem file available, but don't try it first. You try and narrow in on the problem, as in open in different User to demonstrate that Pages is OK. They usually consult here anyway.

Try what works (if anything) then estabish the problem by eliminating other possibilities.

Last resort is to delete Pages and all its system files and reinstall. That usually fixes it:
