What is happening when photo stream is holding pictures for more than 30 days?

Photo stream doesn't hold photos for more than 30 days, but if your device already has a photo stream photo in the My Photo Stream album, it will not be deleted after 30 days. Even though older photos remain on your device, they are no longer in your photo stream. This means that if you connect another device to your photo stream, or if you ever have to restore your device or turn photo stream off, then back on, they will only receive photos that fall within this 30-day window (as the others are no longer there). An important implication of this is that you need to always import your camera roll photos to your computer to avoid losing them, as photo stream cannot be used as a backup.
