Q: My MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion can't play a video from an iPhone--on four different players.  What could be wrong ?

My MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion can't play a video that originated from my niece.  She made it on her iPhone, emailed to my sister's Android phone, and then my sister emailed it to me.  I downloaded the email from my ISP.  I tried playing it on three different players on my Mac.  I tried Quick Time, VLC, and Roxio Video Player, and all of them said something like, "This is not a movie file."  The files says, IMG_5376.MOV 3.4 MB.  I tried opening it in iMovie, but the title was grayed out.  What could be wrong ?  My guess is that the file was damaged somewhere along the way.  I haven't had much trouble playing videos on my Mac.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 2 Ghz Intel core i7
