I'd lost 80% of my contacts from iCloud activation from my iPhone 4.

I'd lost 80% of my contacts from iCloud activation from my iPhone 4. All I did was Settings > iCloud > swithed Contacts and Notes on. It had asked me if I wanted to merge my contacts with iCloud. I selected yes and when I look in contact most are gone!

I have an iPhone 4 and was operating using iOS 6.0.1 version at the time this happened. Can anyone help me retrieve my contacts? I had tried asking a genious at an Apple Store as well requested 2 technical follow ups - They were all useless. I can't restore my contacts as I have not back up my phone for a while.
