    For Firefox:

Go to Tools > Add Ons > Plugins > and disable Java.

Can't say for Chrome since I've never used it (but check for Preferences, or Add Ons, or similar stuff).

I'm told that both disabled Java by default in the latest versions. You are notified when Java is needed with a warning and given a chance to override it. Firefox looks like thisFirefox Activate dialog.png
