Selective sync of iPad and iPhone - same ID

I have an iPad 3 32GB. Am thinking about buying an iphone also , but just a 16GB , as that is plenty of space (and cost) for me on an iPhone.

If Usingng the same Apple ID for both , the problem is I have too many apps I need to use on my iPad and they would take up more than the space than would be on the 16GB iphone if I synced them.

I have not synced more than one device before with iTunes. If I start the setup process on the iPhone using my Apple ID won't it be setup as a mirror image on my current ipad with all the apps on the ipad trying to be shown on the iphone which has less memory?

Where or how can I tell it to set up just a few selected apps etc. only on the new iPhone and leave the iPad as it is now.

Thanks

I have multiple iDevices and I sync different content to each device by setting up the sync preferences on each device.

This is Apple's kb article on how to set up syncing in Windows using iTunes 11.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12313

This assumes that you are running iTunes 11.

You can set up your sync preferences a little more easily by turning off auto sync - at least until you set up the preferences. Launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. Check the box that says Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically, Click OK.

The go to View>Show Sidebar so that you can see the sidebar on the left and see your iPad name under the device heading.

Then you can select your iPad on the left, and go through every tab in the iTunes window on the right and select the exact content that you want to sync to the iPad.

Using apps as an example ....

Connect the iPad to the computer with the cable and launch iTunes.

Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.

Click on the Apps Tab on the right.

Click on Install next to all of the apps that you want to sync to the Phone or click on Remove if you don't want to sync those particular apps.

Click on the Sync Apps Heading in order to select it.

Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

You can selectively sync all of the other content in your iTunes library using the same process. When you are done setting up the sync preferences, you can go back and turn on auto syncing again if you like.
