IBooks will not connect to the store

I have previously downloaded from iBookstore to my iPad mini. IBooks will no longer let me access iBookstore.

The button is visible on the top left of the iBooks shelf, but it is inactive. I have removed and reinstalled the app but still cannot access the store.

Any suggestions on what to try next ?
