I want to be able to access all of the music files on my pc from my I Phone. Do I have to move the files to my I Tunes library first?
I tried connecting my I Phone 5 to my pc via usb while at the windows media player to sync the music to my phone, but wmp didn't recognize my device.
I will greatly appreciate any help.

itunes would automatically create a version of the file that will play on the devices.
in itunes File > Add folder
Select the folder where your music files are.
iTunes will then import them and you can sync them onto your device
Yes - the songs you want on your phone need to be in iTunes. You also need to make sure that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed on your computer. See #5 in this article if you don't have that installed:
