Beep....Beep....Beep goes my 2x2Ghz G5

Ok, it's dead quiet in here and i noticed a very faint beeping sound in my office. After poking around i realized it's eminating from my G5 tower?! Is this normal? I hope and pray it's an "all systems go" beep and not a "I got ****, now where's the fan?" beep!!?? Someone please enlighten me. I've been a mac user for about 20 years and i've never had a machine sit there and beep...

There are some sounds and beep info. here

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86523

If you listen to the G5 low-down at the front grille you should be able to confirm if the beeps are coming from the PSU.

You could try experimenting with 'Processor Performance' in System Preferences - Energy Saver - Options.

Sometimes it may seem quieter on 'Automatic' - sometimes on 'Highest'. It also depends on the demands of the application(s) in use. Processor load and the resulting fan noise may drown out the beeps much of the time. Or perhaps the PSU does not beep when under load...

Note. If you enter "beeps" in the search box at top right in this forum, you will, no doubt, find CHUD mentioned. As you have only "very faint" beeps, it is probably not worth getting into the CHUD in your case.

Thanks maclover! I reviewed the article. It's odd, but the included sound files and descriptions in the article aren't the same as i'm hearing. My beep is constant and unchanging. It's volume stays unchanged the the duration between beeps is constant. I'm surprised i haven't heard more about this before, unless something really is going wrong 😟

I have beeping too, it's as if it's counting down it's own demise. I also have persistent fan surges that kick on constantly even though I only have 1 program open. Now, I have a new problem, a super high-pitched whine (not constant) that is so loud and so high I have to turn up itunes to drown it out. I have a dual 2.7 ghz G5 and took it into the apple store, they ran diagnostics on the fan and printed out the article for me but ultimately, nothing was fixed. I've tried all of the processor performances and nothing will alleviate the noise issues. The store told me my model didn't qualify for a power supply replacement.

Does anyone know if there is anything else to do? I'm getting the feeling that I'm stuck with this nuisance.

I know this isn't going to make you feel any better, but my dual 2.7 had the faint steady beeping and the fan surges out of the box. I also found them really annoying, since my work area is dead quiet, and the G5 had been advertised as a quiet machine. I complained a bunch & leaned on the button until Apple authorized replacement of not only my power supply, but my motherboard & cpu unit as well. It made absolutely no difference. To this day, the Mac is exactly as it was when I first fired it up.

You can read about this stuff in multiple web forums. Some people swear their machines do not exhibit these behaviors. Not everyone has an extremely quiet work room, or very sensitive ears. Many never notice the faint, steady beeping. What astounds me is that they don't seen to notice the continual ramping up & down of the fans. I have given up. You sort of get used to it after a while.

FYI - although there are numerous strange but transitory squeaks & chirps, I have never encountered the whine you describe. In my opinion, these issues are unlikely to be fixed. Perhaps there is some hope that Leopard will mitigate them. I'm not holding my breath.

The beeping is caused by a slight design flaw in a coil in all the PowerMac G5 power supplies except the Quad supposedly. (it's newer and more powerful)

Apple doesn't think it's all that much of a big deal, since normally most any computer noise is drowned out by the fans. Since the PowerMac was designed to have quiet fans, these other noises all a sudden get our attention.

So with that in mind, you might want to c boot from the Tiger install disk and install the Developers Tools. In your System Pref's will be a new pane called "Processor" which, provided you keep a cool room (-75ºF) as you should anyway for a lot of expensive electronic equipment, turn off "nap mode" will eliminate the beeping sound.

You'll have to reset it every-time you boot, there is a script around somewhere that will automatically turn it off on a reboot for you.

That's about it.

Let me take this opportunity to remind you how important it is to clone your boot drive to a external drive and keep it disconnected for emergency repair, hold option boot, recovery etc.

It's a clone and it will save your bacon if your hard drive suddenly fails one morning. Your up within a boot.

One can learn how to clone over at Carbon Copy Cloner forums, they recieve only donations for their software and I recieve nothing.

You're right, I don't feel a whole lot better but after reading your post at least I know that even if I stomped my feet and thru a fit and got my tower replaced it wouldn't make a bit of difference. So knowing that that whole process isn't necessary at this point, makes me a little relieved.

However, as a lifetime mac user I am gravely disappointed that for 3k plus dollars, this is what Apple considers a good/fair product.

Okay, I'll join in but I've got a beeping that sounds suspiciously like my alarm clock. It's just started and goes off at 7:01pm for the past two nights. I've had my G5 for 2+ yrs. never heard this before- Is it going to blow up? It's NOT FAINT at all, at all... I've checked every setting I can think of to try to eliminate it- no go.... Any Ideas? Anyone?- I just loaded CS2 in.... could that be the trouble??? Argh

Yes, I have installed developer tools and disabled Processor Napping. It is easy to do and it does stop the beep instantly. Usually I don't bother, but sometimes when I want things really quiet I do it. The other reason I usually don't do it is that it has zero effect on the ramping up & down of the fans, which is way more annoying anyway. Still an awesome computer even with its annoying shortcomings.
