NEF files can not be imported to iPhoto from Nikon D5200, after importing a window opens "unreadable files".
I shoot Raw & jpeg. Jpegs load fine. iPhoto recognizes Raw & jpeg with my Nikon D3100.
Using iphoto 9.3.2 osx 10.7.5
Mac OS X (10.7.3)
Patty, not all NEF files are in the same format. Raw format is camera specific.

I do not see your camera on this list. You may want to use the software that came with your camera to develope the raw, until your camera will be supported.
