My iMessage was working fine until yesterday, now it will only let me use emails to send imessage's and it says waiting for activation. My phone number is there but it's greyed out and not checked. I can't use it, i've tried a variety of different troubleshooting tips such as logging off my apple ID and then signing in again, restoring iPhone and setting as a new device, trying to active over LTE/3G. I've tried changing date and time settings to automatic and everything but it just won't work! All i want is for me to be able to use my phone number to do iMessages again, could someone please help me out?

Also having the same problems since yesturday. For information i'm in the UK on the EE network (with a T-Mobile sim).

Tried everything as in the first post can use iMessage and Facetime fine with my Apple ID email but no luck with the phone number, just states 'Awaiting activation'...

I've been having the same problem, so annoying. I had to enter my email which I don't want to use on my iPhone. Also now I am getting messages on my iPhone and iPad together. I don't want this, wish I never updated.

We should be able to choose phone or email. APPLE PLEASE FIX.  ASAP

I liked the way I was using it before. Email on my iPad, phone number on my iPhone. Makes sense actually.

I don't want them to mirror each other. My messages are private and not for everyone to read that uses my iPad!!

I'm really hoping someone can say what they've done to fix this problem it's really annoying :(

Totally agree, wonder if this problem is country / network specific?

Also not sure if you get the same but if I toggle iMessage off then on a few times I get a pop up saying 'An error occurred during activation. Try again.' Then selecting ok just allows me to use my email but my phone number is not showing. I'm pretty sure the error during activation is related to my phone number and not my Apple ID which is working fine...

Ok now i'm in shock it's suddenly started working!

Go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Recieve. Tap your Apple ID and select Sign-Out. Then go back to your home screen. RESTART the device, and go back to the Messages settings and sign back in.

If it doesn't work, you may need to sign out of all devices using iMessage (iPads, iPhones, Macs, etc) before it will work again. Some people only had to sign out of one. I had to sign out of everything before restarting the iPhone.

Geesh, just go to Settings -> Messages and turn iMessages off on your iPad.

I had tried all that with no luck including a total phone wipe and not restoring from a backup. Seemed that it has resolved itself almost 24 hours later with no intervention. Seems to be a delay in activating the phone number as iMessage / Facetime work fine using an email.

I saw that further down, but I was responding to the original poster who has not had a resolution yet to their problem, which is slightly different than yours.

My problem was identical to the original poster, but glad it's sorted. Time seemed to be the fix in this case.
