Q: so what is the answer - can i get iBooks on my MacBookPro to download free samples of books from iTunes?

my request to download a book sample from iTunes fwded me to a support page. now I am here. can someone answer my question?

You can buy and download ibooks on your Mac for backup/syncing purposes, but they can currently only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
