I am using Aperture - can anyone tell me please, how to turn a subordinate keyword into a main/parent keyword. I have dragged a keyword to the wrong parent and now can't find how to move it back again.
EG. Flowers
Poppies
Roses
Cars
I need to move Cars back out of the Flowers category.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Are you using the keyword HUD Window->Show Keyword HUD?
You should be able to move/drag it there.
Thanks for your prompt response. Yes I'm using Keyword HUD but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to drag the offending keyword too. When I drag it out of the Flowers category, it just pings back again.
In the Keywords HUD drag the "Cars" to the bottom of the HUD, if you want to move the keyword back to the toplevel of the keyword hierarchie - like in the screenshot below, where I moved the "Vows" from the "Wedding" keywords.
The difficulty is to move a keyword back to the toplevel - you can easily move a keyword to another category by dragging it on top of the category, but with the toplevel there is nothing to drag it to.
But dragging simply to the bottom of the window seems to work - at least for me - I tried this in Aperture 3.4.3 🙂

If you haven't done anything else since, you can choose Edit->Undo move keyword.
One other gotcha with this. The HUD window needs to be showing blank lines at the bottom. When it opens it usually is sized to just fit the keywords there and if you try to move to the top level you have no where to drop the keyword.
Try resizing the keyword HUD window so it shows blank lines and then try it.

That is why I have defined all my keywords relative to a category _Custom. This way I can always drag onto the top level "_Custom" keyword.
Ah ha, the illusive blank lines at the bottom of the HUD. NOW it works. Thank you everyone who has responded to my plea. Very much appreciated.🙂

I don't understand what you are doing here. could you elaborate please.
Aperturistas! This was solved many moons ago:
Use the search field to search for the keyword you want to move.
Take advantage of the now empty space in the Keyword HUD to move the keyword.
Clear the search field.

I wanted a keyword that is the root category of all my own custom keywords, so that there will always be a category to drag to.
For example: You have the top-level categories "Flowers > Poppies" and "Cars". There is no keyword more general than Cars and Poppies, and nowhere to drag to.
If you add a keyword "Sue's keywords" and derive all your own custom keywords from "Sue's keywords":
Sue's keywords > Flowers > Poppies
Sue's keywords > Cars > Chevy
Then you will always be able to drag to "Sue's keywords", if you want to move a keyword to the top level of the hierarchie.
The other major advantage of that scheme is that you will always know which keywords are your's and which came with system and if you need to move your keywords to another library it's easier then hunting through the entire hierarchy for your keywords.
I do this myself just not for the moving aspect.
