Text editing from MAIL toolbar? How?

Is there a way to set up icons (or text) in the toolbar to link to standard text editing tools (Bold, Italics, Underscore, etc.)? Also, icons for "Bigger" and "Smaller" should be included in such a feature set. Yes, the user can go to Format/Styles, etc., but this seems a bit cumbersome and out-of-date


Surely Apple can't have overlooked such features.
