Haha, guess he doesnt understand the scope of the issue. I am having the same issue and here is what I have tried:

1: Single-User Mode deleted my bootcache and user-added fonts.

2: Install Disk Permissions Fix, verified my hardware is ok.

3: Safe-mode dumped third-party widgets, startup items, and desktop files.

4: Reinstalled updates

5: Reinstalled 10.4.6

Even after all that, I still hang in the startup. Its never consistant, its either the grey screen, or the blue screen with the mouse, or the start up status bar that never fills or my desktop with only a spinning wheel and spotlight the only thing to show up.

I am almost entirely sure this is an issue exclusively with the security update. Apple support recomends you backup the computer and reinstall the OS from the disk. I am going to wait for another solution.

You can boot into safe mode by holding down your shift key right after the chime in the start-up. Will boot without extensions but does work. I will keep you updated on my hopeful progress.

Hello, I'm having similar problems with my MacBook Pro. I downloaded and installed the intel security update this morning. On restart, my computer will not boot into Tiger.

The computer "dings" and the apple icon show up, the screen turns blue, and the Loading MAc OS X dialog pops up and it just freezezs at that point.

I don't have BootCamp or another OS installed, but I DO have a bunch of software and documents I'd rather not have to spend time backing up/reinstalling. Any suggestions?

Hey Miketcool, would you mind posting on any further progress you make in this thread? It seems like you're a day ahead of me in terms of tracking down what's going on with this intel update.

Is there anybody out there who's NOT had a problem with this update?

I just got this MacBook Pro last week, new off the shelf.

I've installed the latest updates until today, and additionally I've installed Xcode tools, Macromedia studio 8, Adobe CS2, World of Warcraft, and trial versions of Transmit and Serene Saver.

Also, I've installed a few perl modules using the command-line "cpan -i ", MySQL 5.1 for OSX, and am running Apple's default version of Apache.

I can boot into safe mode, but I don't know what to do from there. It's got to be one of the updates I downloaded this morning (I downloaded the latest 3 updates:intel securty, a quicktime update, and something else).

Any additional help/suggestions would be great. Thanks

Woo hoo!

Ok, here it is:

1: Boot in safe-mode

2: Uninstall Adobe Version Cue.

3: Locate the Version Cue Prefs in the Library/Cache directory and trash it.

4: I suggest erasing your bootcache.kext file in var/db but I am not sure that is necessary. Press "shift-command-g" and type in var/db into the dialogue box. locate the bootcache.kext, drag to trash and authenticate it.

5: I also turned off all my third party widgets and cleared my startup items.

6: Restart normally and wait patiently. Looks like it hangs but it is writing a new bootcache file. Shouldnt take more then 5 minutes.

Let me know if that works. Worked on mine. I am guessing that PPC apps that require a start during login cause it to hang. Intel and startup PPC apps are not friends!
