Sim not compatible

Could anyone possibly help me. I purchased an Iphone 4 in the apple store a few years back and ever since I have always used my vodaphone sim. But I recently changed service providers to Virgin media and I now have a Virgin Micro sim only contract. But when I inserted the sim it said something about inserting previous sim and that the sim isnt compatible. Any help?
