macbook air - airplay works in iTunes but can't mirror computer?

Airplay doesn't show up in the Menu bar, only in Itunes. Is there anything I am doing wrong? (Showing mirroring options when available is checked in Displays in System preferences) Just cant get it to show up. I purchased my Macbook air in Mid 2011, maybe its too old of a model?
