I have a picture of the usb cord going to the itune logo, and am not sure why it won't accesses the factory back up??? Not sure what the kids pushed but it's been tring to update and reset factory setting for 30 hours. Why does it tell me that i have to restore and update, then tell me that it's in recovery mode??? What does that mean???

That would be recovery mode. See if you exit recovery mode:
If not you will need to use iTunes to recover your iDevice and restore the backup.
Why would it take 30 plus hours to upload the recovery and defaul setting to the ipod?

I don't know why it is taking more than 30 MINUTES to recover your ios and settings. Sometime it takes multiple trys. Restarting Windows can help. Sometimes iTunes and Windows don't work well together.
