How do I pair my wireless keyboard to my Apple TV?

Using a Bluetooth Keyboard

I followed this same instructions, but the window to put in the paring code never came up and disconnects. I do have the first generation iPad and I don't have any issues using my keyboard with it, but it's not the same trying it pair it with my apple TV. Please, what am I doing wrong?
