There are a lot of misconceptions going around about how to care for Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Polymer batteries. Discharging the battery to unit shutdown regularly does nothing good for the battery. In fact, tests show that the life of the battery is significantly shortened by following that routine. Optimium balance of battery life and usage seems to be in the range of discharge to 50% charge remaining and then fully recharge. That gives a battery charge cycle life almost four times as long as the deep discharge proceedure.
I have another battery care related question. Is it better to leave my computer plugged in while using it if that is an option or would it be preferable to allow the battery to discharge to 50% before plugging it back in. I've been letting it deep cycle down to 2% as that is what they suggested at the Apple store but I will not let it go much below 50% now.
First, leaving the computer plugged in will not harm the battery. But do unplug periodically and discharge part way.
Second, do not discharge to shutdown inspite of what you may read. Studies by independent test organizations have shown that discharging to 50% and then recharging will result in a battery cycle-lifetime four to five times longer than repeated deep discharging/charging.
