Q: Aperture cannot access this library

the library is located on a firewire drive, which has been working fine up until now. Its a mirrored raid drive. The library is generally a mananged referenced library. My intention was to move the library back to a drive on the IMac and keep the images on the external drive as I am running out of space. I have redently been going through the library making sure the images are stored as referenced files outside of the library itself. I am thinking a disk permisions repair might have gone wrong.
OSX 10.7.5 Aperture version 3.4.3

If it was the Disk Utility one then do the Aperture one, that is the correct one to run in this case.
So the drive the library was one before the copy is a RAID drive and it works OK but when you copied it to, where?, you get the permissions errors.
If you just laid out the whole situation it would be so much easier then us playing 20 questions

Feb 7, 2013 1:13 AMby Niko K,I carried out the permissions repair using disk utility. I cant do anything with Aperture because it fails to open and gives me the error message that I described in my first post. I'll go through the entire sequence of events.
1. I moved my Aperture library and all my images, from an internal drive on my iMac, 27" 2.8 i7, 12GB Ram to an external raid drive which is formatted as Mac OS x extended
Everything was working fine at this point.
2. Moved all my images from Managed files to referenced files but keeping them on the same drive, i.e. just relocated the originals
Again, this worked fine, not problems here
3. I run periodic permissions repairs on my hard drive (the MacHD drive) which I did and I think it is probably from this point that I was not able to open aperture.
4. Tried another permissions repair on the HD drive but this has not had any effect.
5. What I wanted to do next was to relocate the Aperture Library back onto a static internal drive on the imac to then use the referenced files on the external drive.
As I do not know a lot about the workings of some of this software or the system its not so easy for me to know what is relevent and what is not. I just write what I can.

The permissions repair in Disk Utility do not know about the permissions required in the Aperture Library. Use Aperture's own "Repair Permissions" to fix them, as Frank said:

You need to use Aperture's "Aperture Library First Aid Tools":
- Select your Aperture Library in the Finder and hold down the ⌥⌘-key combination firmly, while double clicking the library.
- From the "First Aid" panel select the option "Repair Permissions". Then try again, if you now can open the Aperture Library.

As I wrote you have to run the disk repair from Aperture's fist aid window. Hold down the option and comand key while staring Aperture and you should get the window see Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
The focus of the permission repair in Disk Utility is limited to system level files, files in the OS. It knows nothing of Applications or user data and will not change permission on those types of files.

While this can do no harm it is a complete waste of your time unless you are experiencing errors. And even then it is of limited use. Running this command had noting to do with your current problem but as I wrote it also won't fix anything.
Run the Aperture permission repair and post back. If there is still a problem there are other ways to possibly fix it.

Just thought i would post an update about this issue. I tried the permissions repair but it still didnt like it, I was getting error messages that indicated I did not have permissions to access the library. I took a look at the permission setting for the library and everything seemed fine and it appeared that the access permissions were set correctly. When I did try and chane the access permissions I was unable to, these options were all grayed out.
In the end I copied everything back to my internal drive and it all works fine now. The external drive was formated as OSX Extended so I can not undetstand whay it did not work. Especially when it had been working prior to the problem.
So it is working now which is great. Thanks for your help.

The current fix is this for me.
I was unable to change the permissions on the external drive where I keep the Library. I logged out. Opened the Special User account. I then changed permisions in the Get Info pallet of the Aperture Libary that is on a external hard drive. In particular I checked the "Ignore owenrship on this drive."
I went back to my acoount and Aperture opened right up. We will see for how long.

When press and hold Option and Command keys to start Aperture from the dock the Aperture Library First Aid popup does not appear and Aperture > Preferences is grayed--not selectable.
Now what?
