Will Time Machine run on 10.5.8 server to backup itself?

Does Time Machine have the ability to run as a client on a 10.5.8 Server to backup the boot drive? Time Machine exists on the OS and I've asked it to backup the boot drive to an external HD, but it's been 'Preparing' for some time. Does this work?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Server 10.5.8, 2g Ram

I wouldn't suspect Retrospect. I have the same config with Retrospect backing up the home dir volume. Its working for me. I would start with the drives. I would test first with a different backup drive as you should know fairly quickly if it is a problem on the system or boot volume drive or external. If the original backup drive is a problem I'd use Disk Utility or Diskwarrior on it to check for and repair problems. If the boot volume is the problem I'd troubleshoot the boot disk the same way and then have a look at the system. The Time Machine Buddy widget makes it easy to read the TM backup logs so you might install that and see if there is anything useful that comes up.
