I am trying to run a new LED 27 inch Cinema Display with my old Power Mac G5. I am using the Altona DP-400 converter so now I can access the high resolutions in the display but the quality is terrible -- weird color artifacting. Is the problem with my graphics card? I have this one installed: NVIDIA GeForce 7300.

Are you sure you don't have a Mac Pro, not a Power Mac G5? (The Mac Pro has two optical drive slots.)
Anyway, the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 has two DVI ports but only one is dual-link, which is needed for the resolution of the 27" display. Try using the other DVI port.

Yes, when I try the first DVI port, the 27" in not supported -- I only get the two lower res options. WHen I plug into the other port, the 27" is recognized and I get all my res options but the weird color artifacting thing happens.
I'm stumped.
It's probably is the graphics card. That model tends to fail after a few years.
Try a Safe Boot:

That turns off hardware graphics acceleration. If that fixes the colors then the problem is almost certainly the graphics card. (Don't use Safe Mode for normal operation. Many OS X functions are disabled.)
You can use the ATI Radeon HD 5770 in your system (despite what Apple says) if you are running Snow Leopard or Lion. (Your Mac Pro won't run Mountain Lion.)
Ah...tried the Safe Boot and the color problem is fixed. I will try the upgrade kit you mentioned. Thank you SO much for the great insight and help.
