Software update on my iphone says I must sync w itunes

Software update on my iphone says I must sync with itunes on my computer using a cable and click "sync with this iphone over WiFI" I need this in order to get software updates. Do I need to bury a new piece of equipment for this? Cable connect?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1

To connect your phone to your computer use the cable that you use to connect you iPhone to your charger. It's the cable that came with the phone.
