I had to erase and reformat my hard drive. With Apple's help I was able to recover most of my docuements but since I had pages on iWork they were not worried about trying to bring it over from my backup. After reloading iWork, I cannot get Pages to work properly and it doesn't upgrad to the latest version. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you run Software Update after reinstalling iWork? Pages in particular is sensitive to being out-of-date.

Yes. It says no software needs updating. I know that can't be true since it's the original iWorks disk. It will not open any of my Pages files. It seems to act like it doesn't recognize it's installed even though it says the installation was complete. I read on a few other posts that people just give up and repurchase Pages. I need all three programs and I'd rather not spend $60 for someting I already own. John
Download the manual update and run it. The Software Updater is now just for the App Store version:

Hi Peter,
The link downloaded, ran, and said it was installed. However, it acts exactly the same as before. I went to get info and shows it is running as 32bit, created 12/21/08, last modified tonight, version 4.3, Pages.app
I don't know if any of the above helps? Thanks for the link. Assuming it worked I was going to ask if there was such a link for iLife as well, although I haven't tried installing it yet.

Pages '09 v4.3 is the latest.
Have you tried restarting from another User account?

Not sure how to do this. How would this work?
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > System > Accounts > click on + in bottom left corner > give it name etc
Menu > Apple > Restart > you should be offered a choice of Users, choose the new one
See if/how Pages runs in this. If it is OK then there is a problem with your Main User Library.

Is your Mac running with the current date set in System Preferences? The creation date for my Pages v4.3 is in 2012, not 2008. Set date and time automatically?
That's the modification date, not the creation date. John's date is correct for Pages '09.

Ok, I created a different user. Restarted under new user and problem is the same. ???
Viking OSX, the file date and version is correct.
Any other recommendations? This is starting to feel like Apple's ploy to collect another $60 from me. 😟
How did you acquire iWork form the start? DVD or download with a serial number?

Dust off the box where you store your old original DVDs and reinstall iWork from that disk.

I will add to Jerrold's answer that you should first delete iWork. To delete all pertinent part use Yvan's uninstall script at https://www.box.com/s/xppaki015asuuzbb34i7/1/133321889/1570046414/1
Log out and in again and now install from the DVD. Then do the Software updates
