iPad Mini configuring for hours

Just received my new iPad Mini yesterday. (My first apple product.) Set up with no problems. Used several times today with no problems. This evening it wanted to download iOS6.1 update. Download seemed to go okay, but the iPad has been configuring for a couple of hours now. Is this normal? If not, what do I try? Thanks for your help.

Never mind. iPad finally finished configuring after I went to bed. We're talking 5+ hours here. I had no idea it would take that long, especially considering the Mini is virtually empty. A warning about lengthy configuration times would have prevented a lot of unnecessary concern.
