Go to the Crucial website. Download and run their System Scanner to see what memory is required.

Buy the memory from Crucial or OWC as it is 100% compatible with your iMac and will be a lot cheaper than Apple's memory.

Yes...you can add RAM yourself without voiding any warranties. Our advice would be to not buy it from Apple, but instead from either crucial.com or macsales.com. You'll save a ton of money from either site. And the RAM's not difficult at all to install.

Just to add a note - RAM is user-upgradeable on all models of iMac EXCEPT for the 2012 21.5" iMac (and, quite likely, any future iterations of that model).
