Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I'm not sure what you mean with that. Do you want to disconnect the SuperDrive? Your computer will work fine even if it has got a damaged SuperDrive. All iMacs (except the Late 2012 iMac) have got an internal SuperDrive, so you can use a USB drive without disconnecting the SuperDrive
I just got a USB superdrive sent to me today from Apple. I plugged it in but nothing happen. I didnt see it pop up or anything. I call support but they just told me to send it back. I did notice that the package said...compatible with mac systems without a built-in optical drive.
The external Apple SuperDrive will not work on an iMac. Return it for a refund and buy an external USB drive from a different manufacturer which will work fine.
Note that the Apple USB SuperDrive only works on Macs without SuperDrive (Late 2012 iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina display). However, you can use it on all Macs with this workaround > http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/02/use-the-macbook-air-superdrive-with-any-almost-ma c/
...since my drive not working I figured that a USB would do the trick.
And the Apple USB SuperDrive can work with your Mac if you see the workaround
FYI: I have an optical drive and it does not show up on the desktop. Try this: plug it in and then insert a CD or DVD and see if that shows on the desktop. They only seem to show once you insert media.
Thanks that was easy
You are welcome
