MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 - Freeze

Hi all,

Facts:

model: MacBookPro8,1

OS: OS X 10.7.5

Story:

i got a Macbook Pro 8,1 (13,3" Early 2011) which worked flawlessly - until yesterday.

Yesterday I decided to install the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626) - a bit unusual for me, since i normally wait a few weeks until others tried such an update. I did nothing in parallel on my mac, just the update. After the installation process i rebooted my system to finish the update process, the scm update installation run, everything seemed to went fine.

But shortly after the login process, my System froze and i had to hard shutdown my macbook. The first 3 or 4 attempts to only switch on my computer i got only a flashing indicator led, as usual, but not display output, no start sound, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried again, the system started to boot until the login window, but i had no time to input my credentials - the system froze again.

Since a got a bit computer experience, it's my day job, i first thought of a bad RAM. So i replaced it with two totally new ones (Corsair Mac Memory) and some older original Apple RAM, but nothing changed. I did the same with the harddisk, even i don't think it's related to a harddrive failure because of the symptoms, while trying to install a fresh OS - the system froze again.

After that i tried everything Apple proposed: SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times, but nothing helped in my case.

So the current state is as follows:

- The system freezes everytime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. But normally within 10 seconds. (I observed, the longer the computer stays off, the later the freeze appears). After a hard shutdown, i've to wait a few minutes to get the computer to display anything.

- I read the log files after installing the harddrive to another computer (it works fine there), but there seems nothing special (i could post it, if somebody need it). The system just stops responding.

I think, it MUST be related to the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6, because i had no problems at all before this firmware update, problems started after it.

Is anybody out there, who has another suggestion for me, or has the same symptoms?

I am having the exact same problem. MacBook Pro 13in, mid 2010, OSX 10.8.2, 4GB RAM, 2.4 Core duo.

For days I've been trying to figure out what was going on, and I finally realized it might be related to the SMC controller. I saw this post, and just was able to get my computer to stay booted long enough to see that I updated to SMC 1.6 on Feb 4th, which is right when the problems started happening. Also worth noting is that the computer will sometimes not recognize my airport card or ethernet card. Even when it does recognize it, neither works, and often, turning of the wifi if it is detecting it will freeze the computer.

Hi,

after 2 long days i got a bit further.

Long story short: i've figured out, that there must be a problem related to my battery (i thought this update was to fix issues?...). To get me right, the battery itself doesn't SEEM to be damaged, my laptop runs (or kind of) without a wall adapter, but i get those issues/freezes.

So i tried everything and today as a last attempt, i tried to work without my battery -> and voila, laptop runs without problems.

I've got about 300 cycles on my battery, so this is much lower than 1000. Furthermore a got no problem at all BEFORE this update with it.

So, to lean wide out of my window, perhaps this SMC update could be the reason.

So I did as you instructed. It took a few restarts, but I finally got everything to work. I was able to connect to the internet via the wifi and ethernet ports. But I left the computer sitting for awhile, and I came back (display was asleep), and I had lost my internet connection. System Information still showed the Ethernet card, but when I clicked on the wifi symbol at the top of the screen, the computer froze again.

I don't know if our problems are related, or if SMC can affect the wifi and ethernet cards, but this all started with that update.

Have a similar Problem with my Mac pro 13''. Since I installed Firmware-Update smc 1.6 the computer crashes regulary. All of the sudden the Screen gets black and computer dead. The worst thing is that the computer is then dead for several hours! No way I can start the computer with or witout battery. When I finally get it to work, the Fan runs high speed but I do not see what the Problem is? Is there any way to overwrite the new Firmware with the old Version?

I did a reinstall on ML to see if it would go away...no success.

The research I've done says that the firmware cannot be overwritten, it can only be flashed and then updated from there. They could possibly flash it for you at an Apple store, but I'm not sure if they'd be willing to.

My computer has improved though. After the initial reinstall of ML, it was still the same. It actually crashed after the reboot once the install was done. After many crashes, I was able to get it on long enough, with the ethernet and wifi working as well, to update to 10.8.2. It was still crashing after that.

As I already had spent some time using the computer with the battery out, I decided to shut the computer down, put the battery back in, and not plug it in overnight. I started it up yesterday with the intention of running out the battery, just to see how long it would last. The computer was fine at startup, and I ran down the 7 hours of battery life with no crash. I plugged it in this morning to charge and have still had no crashes.

I have no explanation for why things changed.

Tranks. Seems like there is some Connection with power supply. I could not start with the Plug in and when I took it out it worked- at least for 2 minutes. Then it crashed again and I Probably have to wait some hours now.

Given that the fan is running at max speed while CPU is low - for the few hours the computer works - iis seems like we have multiple problems here.

I have a Macbook pro unibody 13 mid 2010, I made the firmware update too, the day after I had suddenly my computer freezing when I was watching videos on youtube. I tried to restart it, and it was stucked to a white screen. I tried all the possible solutions, : SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times.

I tried to reinstall the system from the dvd, and from a USB key : Impossible to install it as no hd was showing up in the list of availaible drives. I tried the online restoration. Tried with another hd with lion on it. The only thing that worked was to launch the system from an external usb drive, when it was launched, the wifi and bluetooth cards were not working (no cards).

I tried to launch the same hd with lion on it on another macbook (no firmware updates made on this macbook), and the wifi and the bluetooth was working fine on it.

I really do believe that this update has something to do with my problems, and expect from Apple to fix them

I have MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) and similar problem (gray screen, system not start, noisy fan, etc.)🙂

I applied last SMC firmware update 1.6

as a result I have unworking MacBook Pro.

When I have been looking table http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I am realised that link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626 on update for MacBookPro8,1 1.68f99 (SMC 1.6) and for MacBookPro7,1 1.62f7 (SMC 1.6) is same. And then I booted from Installation Disk1 with 10.6.4 and saw that my version of SMC is 1.68f99 instead 1.62f7.

In my opinion it's the main reason of our common problem. Apple released not correct SMC update and this update made briks from our MacBook Pro!!!

My mac has 1.62f7 and I'm still having the same problems. I've been surviving by removing the battery every time my computer starts freezing, get it to start up and work correctly after a few tries, shut down and leave the computer unplugged, battery and power adapter, plug the battery in the next morning, and start the computer up without the power plugged in. It takes a few starts, but usually I can get it to work, and as long as I leave it unplugged, it works fine until the battery gets low and I have to plug it in again.

Apple, please look at this problem!!!
