Q: MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 - Freeze

Hi all,

Facts:

model: MacBookPro8,1

OS: OS X 10.7.5

Story:

i got a Macbook Pro 8,1 (13,3" Early 2011) which worked flawlessly - until yesterday.

Yesterday I decided to install the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626) - a bit unusual for me, since i normally wait a few weeks until others tried such an update. I did nothing in parallel on my mac, just the update. After the installation process i rebooted my system to finish the update process, the scm update installation run, everything seemed to went fine.

But shortly after the login process, my System froze and i had to hard shutdown my macbook. The first 3 or 4 attempts to only switch on my computer i got only a flashing indicator led, as usual, but not display output, no start sound, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried again, the system started to boot until the login window, but i had no time to input my credentials - the system froze again.

Since a got a bit computer experience, it's my day job, i first thought of a bad RAM. So i replaced it with two totally new ones (Corsair Mac Memory) and some older original Apple RAM, but nothing changed. I did the same with the harddisk, even i don't think it's related to a harddrive failure because of the symptoms, while trying to install a fresh OS - the system froze again.

After that i tried everything Apple proposed: SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times, but nothing helped in my case.

So the current state is as follows:

- The system freezes everytime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. But normally within 10 seconds. (I observed, the longer the computer stays off, the later the freeze appears). After a hard shutdown, i've to wait a few minutes to get the computer to display anything.

- I read the log files after installing the harddrive to another computer (it works fine there), but there seems nothing special (i could post it, if somebody need it). The system just stops responding.

I think, it MUST be related to the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6, because i had no problems at all before this firmware update, problems started after it.

Is anybody out there, who has another suggestion for me, or has the same symptoms?

G,

My mac has 1.62f7, I ordered and installed a new sata internal hardrive cable and it fixed the problem of hard drive not recognized. I have still the problem with the wifi at the moment.

    Update for everyone:

I took the computer into the Apple Store finally. They ran diagnostics, and they found a problem with the SMC and said I needed a new logic board. I explained that my computer worked fine before the update, and that I was not the only one having this problem. The issue was escalated to engineering, and they came back in a few days and said that I would have to fix it on my dollar. Before I even had the chance to complain, the store manager said that this was completely unfair, and had my computer fixed (yea Apple, I still have faith!). I picked it up a couple weeks ago, and have had no problem since.

A couple days ago, I went to do a software update, and it's asking me to DL SMC 1.6 again. ***? I'm currently running SMC 1.62f6, so why does it want me to download another version of 1.6? I called Apple immediately, and the guy at AppleCare was extremely helpful. He told me that there had been no updates of the current 1.6 since the release in late January, and he suggested that I should not DL it if my computer is working fine. He also saw on the forums how many other users were having similar problems with this update, so he created a complaint attached to my account detailing what has happened to this point with me, and I will be advised once they have more information on whether I should DL SMC 1.6 again like Software Update is telling me to do. He also created a compliment attached to the store and store manager who fixed my computer to begin with.

While I'm frustrated with this problem and the fact that so many people seem to be having similar issues and nothing has yet been done about it on a large scale, I and quite happy with the customer service I've received in getting to the point I am at now. Apple still does so many things right.

    Apple Finally fixed my computer!

I had the same problem with SMC update 1.6 (see discussion here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4826086) and after about 3 months of struggles, including an email to Phil Schiller Apple stepped up and sent the local Authorised Service Providers the CS code that got my Logic Board changed over and my computer fixed.

As with Akimont88 My computer also requested the SMC update again, I haven't done it yet despite technical support promising that it's okay and I should go ahead and do it.

So to all of you stuck after this update, have hope and keep fighting, Apple have been good at taking responsibility for this fault.

    cheers and good luck

I had the same problem installing the SMC firmware update 1.6

    My Macbook Pro fell through.

made a noise and no longer cared.

I removed the HD and put another in place, resolvel the problem is running without problem on startup.

if it happens the same problem with someone just swap the HDD and connect the MAC again that will work.

and simply return the HDD it was before.

but I can not update SMC Firmware Update 1.6

is always asking to update the App Store.

It is important that I update SMC Firmware Update 1.6 or can I leave this way.

    I did this process twice

    Boot ROM Version: MBP71.0039.B05

    Do SMC Version (system): 1.62f6

your solution won't work for everybody. I have done what you did in the past and I solved the problem by changing the hard drive sata connector
