PPC legacy inventory… Virtual Snow Leopard on Mac Mini 2012-13?

The new Mac Mini, especially with USB3, but also Fusion Drive and plenty of RAM, is very appealing to me… I am making an inventory of all the PPC apps I will loose when I upgrade my machine. Some pro calibration software and costly specialized devices I will be disconnected from…

There was a discussion about installing successfully a virtual Snow Leopard in Parallels Desktop on the 2011 Mac Mini.

Can I install Snow Leopard on the new Mac Mini

I have Windows running in Parallels but was quite surprised to learn that it takes Mac Os's too! Has anyone had success installing on the late 2012 (current) model? How does Parallels behave in relation to ports? I remember some issues in Classic, when programs could not always communicate with devices. (please do not **** me off with licensing issues)

Lastly, what apps will be taken by ML, is it only the Intel ones, only 64 bits, or will it take for instance Universal 32 bits apps such as Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 as well?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I seem to be talking to myself, but I'm scratching the web and I found something I'm glad about…

Found a discussion where the following is mentioned:

A guy installed on a computer running Mountain Lion, some Rosetta components from the optional installs on a Snow Leopard install disk. Despite the fact that the operation resumed, as expected, Rosetta wasn't properly running, and the PPC apps were still no issue. BUT, something was installed however, that allowed the installation of universal binaries linked to PPC installers, such as Final Cut Studio 2 !!! The guy says that Final Cut Studio 2 works this way in Mountain Lion. If that is true, it would a solution for some of my valued old plugs!

Arrgh… I read a little more about the cited post and followed to the original post on MacRumors. It seems that what I thought was straightforward requires in fact some software tweaking. Never mind, make us know what we shouldn't do!

If you do not like THIS post...

Pick up a copy of Snow Leopard Server off of eBay (as cheap as $51 recently), and it will install into Parallels with any software tweaking.

I seem to be trampling on beaten tracks… I agree Michael, the installation through Terminal command seem to be a very healthy approach, provided the command is made available by a computer geek like you ! I'll probably go that way when I need it. If it works for Final Cut Studio 2, should it also work alike with any similar installer?

One further point I'd wish to be clarified for me is the use of Migration assistant. In Mountain Lion, will it import every bit of the old stuff, or will it select the Intel software only? If it does import the PPC and Universal binary, will FCP work straight in ML, or not? Reinstalling from the installers will "translate" the Universal binary into Intel format have I read somewhere? In which format does an app installed that way appear in system info: Universal / Intel ?

That is my thesis, too; but there are only a few programs that suffer from the "installer fails due to PowerPC, yet once installed the program works on Intel" world, such as Final Cut Studio 2, Logic 8 and a few others.

Kappy has forgotten more than I'll ever know about migrating from a PowerPC:

Read my theory on the "installing Rosetta from the Snow Leopard Install DVD" issue here.

Not having a copy of Final Cut Studio 2, I am currently unable to prove my theory!

I now have confirmation that the Terminal instruction will install FCS2 in Mountain Lion and the problem has nothing to do with Rosetta:

That's great.

Have you a clue about the possibillity of installing (and using) Golive 8 (CS2) in ML that way? This would be heaven! (well…almost)

CS2 is PowerPC applications that require Rosetta. Rosetta was eliminated from OS X since Lion and now deleted in Mt. Lion, too.

It would only work in my Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed into Parallelsfor use in Mt. Lion:

Click on the blue link above and see if you are interested in that approach to using CS2 in Mt. Lion and let me know.

Oh yes, that's right. Maybe a copy of Golive 9 would work, but it's very hard to get.

The Parallels solution looks fine, but for me that would involve getting a more recent version of win dose, a Snow Leopard Server install CD, and I have no clue whether this setting would connect correctly to the ftp servers. I will have to keep an older Mac with SL for as long as I will use Golive, which is manageable.

Thanks Michael for your hints !
