how to pause downloads in safari

I am using Mountain Lion in a MacBookPro 15 inch. The latest one. I don't know how to pause downloads in Safari and how to resume downloading?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

As of now, in macOS Sierra version 10.12.5 (I don't know if it used to work in Mountain Lion), on the top right corner in Safari is the download arrow clicking on which opens the list of files that are downloaded or downloading. Hovering the mouse over a file that is downloading gives you a cross(x) which stops the download though, if you start the download again from that button, it will resume the download from the same percentage(if you didn't close Safari after stopping the download).

I hope this helps.
