Try a different cable.
Try a different USB port.
Is the device recognized on the computer when connected?
The device is recognized as I've downloaded music & photos in addition to apps. I've also tried different ports.
The ports are likely not providing sufficient power to charge the device.
Try plugging the device into a USB port on the rear of a desktop computer.
If it still does not work, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.
iPad 4's don't charge from the computer
Thanks a million!! There should be a note somewhere in the instructions that inform the user that you can't charge the iPad 4 from the computer. Customers with iPods & iPhones are accustom to this and probably automatically assume that this is the case for iPads. I'm sure I'm not the 1st person that poised this question and it can quickly be remedy adding this in the instructions.

newly purchased iPad 4 (32g) isn't charging via USB port when connected to laptop. I've tried multiple laptops and have been unsuccessful. I can only charge direct via AC adapter.
