Hi. I downloaded OnyX (cleaning software) and tried to install it, but get message that it can't be opened because it's unidentified. I would have to change my settings. Is OnyX safe to use and why doesn't apple identify it?
The reason it can't be identified is that Titanium Software is not in the list of Apple's approved developers and as a result Lion and Mountain Lion's Gatekeeper feature does not allow it to run. However, this does not mean that OnyX is malware, as I use it for mundane purposes although its use is necessary at best.
But if you want to use OnyX, what you can do is find the OnyX.app file in the applications folder and do a right-click (or secondary) by holding two fingers in the trackpad or click the application while holding the control click. Select the Open option. Another Gatekeeper Window will ask whether or not you want the application to open the application, just click the open button in that particular Window and that will allow OnyX to run on your Mac.
As Csound1 says, Mac's rarely need cleaning unless there's something that clearly affects its functions such as corrupt preference files, fonts, or application caches which can be also solved by manually deleting the offending files.
Hope you find this information helpful!
