How to update my iPod software?

My iPod touch does not give the option to update to 6.1. It says that my software (5.1.1) is up to date. Anyone know why?

iPod touch (3rd generation), iOS 5.1.1

Because its hardware doesn't support iOS 6.

For clarity, the 3G can only go as high as 5.1.1
