Ok. Back after surgery--one thumb typing... Received the replacement AE with 7.6.1 and seeing 18MBps transfers and 56MBps downloads again. Spoke engineering, they will be receiving my unit by now to test. Was told no solution yet, but all of my issues were reproducible. So, it seems that 7.6.3 physically changes AE and reverting to 7.6.1 does totally fix it. Call Apple and ask them to send you a replacement unit and DO NOT UPGRADE TO 7.6.3!!! Will post more as I hear more.
Hi Dubblou,
If you have an iOS device download the Airport Utility App for it. I used my iPad. Open it and it should show you your network devices including the AE in the TC. Select it for Edit and it will let you select 7.6.1. Update it and you should be good to go. It worked for me.
Good Luck,
Cy
Hi Cy,
Thanks for this! It worked and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the solution to my wifi constantly dropping out. Thanks again!

Similar experiences to everyone else.
Extreme with an Express extender. Moved both to 7.6.3 - became unstable, slower etc.
Moved Extreme back to 7.6.1 and all is OK again.
DO NOT UPGRADE to 7.6.3.
Does anybody know how I can migrate back to firmware update 7.6.1 for an Airport Extreme Base Station?
Ditto. I upgraded and forgot about it. Started to have to restart my modem/router every day. Complained to my ISP about the sudden terrible service and they asked if I'd changed anything. When I recalled updating my firmware, I did a quick Google search and found I wasn't the only one having problems after this firmware update. Rolled it back to 7.6.1 and suddenly I'm stable again. Gonna call AppleCare Monday, not that it will do any good.
Do you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch? Install the Airport Utility and touch your router, select the firmware, select "older Versions", select a version, select "Firmware" to go back a screen, select "Download and Install" and let it do its thing. I'm not sure if Airport Utility on OS X will do the same. At this point, all it allows me to do is update to 7.6.3.
I have a MacBook Pro with OSX Mountain Lion. And no, it won't give me that option. Is there another way to migrate back in OSX?
In Applications> Utilities there is an App called "Airport Utility". Thats where you'll find it!!
Thanks but that's the problem. I already went into Airpot Utility and there was no option to migrate back in there. So that's why I asked if there was another way. I probably should have been more specific in my last post. So any ideas?
Ah right! Understand. I think Apple in the latest release have hidden that function! Can't remember exactly, but I think if you hover the mouse on the or near version and I think hold down the option button the feature "un-hides" itself!?? Maybe it's that or the Ctl key maybe!? Will be able to confirm tomorrow, but I think there are threads about it somewhere here!?
Hope that helps!
Hobodork - Run the Airport Utility. Click on the device, then Option click on the version and you'll get a pull down with the various versions. Select 7.6.1. Then click on Update.
Kinda hidden. Hovering, clicking and option clicking reveal a bunch of different stuff about the device.
What's the latest word on the 7.6.3 update? I'm still on 7.6.1 because of all the issues surrounding the update. Should I stay put?
Im still on 7.6.1 (after a try at 7.6.3).
I have learned this. If you are satisfied with 7.6.1 firmware performance/features and not in need of new features, stay with the 7.6.1.
For me this airport will die with 7.6.1 unless a computer/IOS firmware update force me to upgrade airport too.
