That was really my only thing to offer! I'm not tech savvy enough to figure it out! You may need to buy a new Extreme and hope it works! Have you tried Googling the problem? Trying different phrases to make sure you're getting all possible scenarios for the fix?

    Hi Maccanaut,

Sounds like you've got DNS issues with the AE, presumably the Airport Extreme was working previously?? And you were able to connect to the internet via wifi with the Airport Extreme.  Have you tried resetting everything to factory settings, if you have any port settings or otherwise, best write them down first!??

    Give that a go!?

    Ian

I can get internet with the ethernet cable from the modem to the imac, but if i connect the cable to the airport extreme i get wifi but no internet.

Is your Airport Extreme actually connected to the modem?  Check the cables that run from the modem to the Aiport Extreme, if you have another patch cord use that to ensure you don't have a bad cable in your setup.. If that is working OK, try plugging the iMac directly into one of the remaining Aiport Extreme's LAN ports to see if that works.  If you still get no connectivity, I would return the Aiport Extreme to the store and have it checked, it may be bad.

Thanks of course for ur help just the same :)

Im not tech savvy either.....but hope we both get there :)

    Cheers.

Thanks Ian. Yes was all working previously on my laptop, which strangely has the same issues now also. Ur right....its DNS issues. Thats been confirmed now, but the solution seems hard to come by. Tech support at both ISP and Apple are baffled. I'll get there in the end of course.....just sooner rather than later preferably.

Did all the resetting etc, 7 times over. Im in gods hands now. Trouble is im athiest. :)

Hi and thanks for ur suggestions. The AE is connected to the modem via ethernet cable yes. Ive also tried using different cables, ports etc. ive also tried running a cable from the modem directly to the imac. Nothing works so far. The only way i can get internet at the moment is cable directly from modem to imac. The AE is a blockage in the connection.

If i connect the cable from the modem to the AE only, i can get the green light on the AE, but airport utility shows me that i have wifi but not internet.

Im gonna experiment using airport utility accessed from ipad, coz looking at it yesterday i have a feeling there are more settings to alter there than in the airport utility i have on my imac.

I should add that the apple techs said my AE might be faulty and to take it back, but i tried my previous router which is a belkin model and previously worked fine also. It now has the same issues. So i doubt its the router at all. Its a problem with odd DNS numbers.

I'm glad I read this before I upgraded my 3rd gen. Airport Extreme. I actually tried to upgrade, but I guess it failed because I was using a version of Airport Utility that was too old (5.5.3, the latest available for Windows) -- firmware would download but nothing happened after that. When I googled for some help, I ended up here, and now I will avoid 7.6.3 and stick to 7.6.1.

I'm experiencing the same problems reported here with my AE. I had to constantly reboot the AE (and my son had to give up playing Black Ops on the PS3). I found this discussion and rolled back to 7.6.1 tonight ... so far so good.

Question - I also have two Airport Express' at firmware v. 7.6.3 on my home network. Do I need to roll those back to 7.6.1 too or just the Extreme?

    Thanks.

I had a new Express and couldn't roll it back past 7.6.2, with the TC at 7.6.1.

However, two days ago I upgraded to the new Time Capsule and the signal is much, much stronger so I took a risk and upgraded my Express to 7.6.3 and all is good.

With the old TC (4th gen), the link speed to the Express (in a separate building in the backyard), as reported by the Airport Utility (click on the device, then on Connection) was 5-10Mbs.  With the new TC the speed jumped up to 40Mbs and the connection is very stable.

The new TC is a huge improvement.

I have two Express' running 7.6.3 and an Extreme running 7.6.1; that combination works for fine me.  Upgrading the base station to 7.6.3 results in dropped connections, or at best much slower speeds.

I have had connection issues with every single unit running 7.6.3... Any device, but in particular mobile devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad) seem to have serious problems maintaining connections, especially with the 5GHz channels.

Rolling everything back to 7.6.1 (7.6.2 for newer devices) has fixed this in my home for now.

Indeed, I would not be surprised if loekvh's devices are simply connecting directly to his 7.6.1 base station now!

Really hoping for 7.6.4... the guest network system was actually useful here...

I thought that too first, but the utility shows devices connected to the Express.

Out of curiosity, is it running in the 2.4 spectrum (either with the express set only to 2.4, or the devices being limited due to their own hardware (older iPhones, etc)?

As mentioned above, my connectivity issues are limited to the 5GHz band, and I wonder if perhaps that is indeed a common thread here.

I'll have to owe you the answer to that.  When I get home I'll take a look.
