Also if the utility shows the correct version then the Airport should have the correct version as well. I am guessing it restarted itself after the upload from your device, yes? The utility looks at the Airpprt and reports what it sees on there.

Hope this has it all worked out for you.

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Earlier today I got a message on my desktop that there was a firmware update for my AirPort Extreme. I had version 7.6.1 and it was working fine. I downloaded the update to 7.6.3 and it took a couple of minutes after the download for the AE to update itself (I got the yellow light for a while, then the green light). At this point I had no WiFi.
    2. I finally figured out how to revert to 7.6.1 on my laptop (OS 10.6.8), but the same procedure would not let me revert on my desktop (OS 10.5.8). When I successfully reverted to 7.6.1 on my laptop, I never observed the AE reset. I still had no WiFi.
    3. I downloaded the AirPort Utility to my iPhone. It found my network, but that is all it would do - just find my network. It would not show me what version I had. It asked me for my password, which I gave. But it just keeps asking for my password, no other action. I still have no WiFi.

    John,

The firmware version has nothing to do with which computer you are on.  It has to do with the Airport Extreme.

The password that the airport utility wants is the password setup on the Airport the first time it was configured. This is not your Mac user password. If you don't remember the Airports password you will have to hard reset it so it back to the defaults then use the iPhone to go frame there. Hope this helps. You may want to try the default which is public if I remember correctly before you do the reset.

The version number is on the Airport not the computer. The computer  just reports what it sees on the Airport.

I agree that the firmware version usually has nothing to do with which computer I am on. However, my desktop says 7.6.3, my laptop says 7.6.1, my iPhone is no help yet, my AE has not reset.

I am using the correct password. I reset the password earlier today to the same password I have used all along for the AE.

In that case I'd hard reset the airport and go from there.

I have the same problem and am guessing it is because of the 7.6.3.  how do i download the 7.6.1 now that it has been disabled?  i didn't understand about downloading from airport utility?  thanks!!!!

    Try this.       http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1218

Also if you have an iPhone or iPad get the airport utility from the App Store. This is usually the easiest way to restore the older version.

thanks.  I checked the library, older firmware versions on my mac, and it only has the 7.6.3 listed.  I've had the base station for about 6 mos, but thought this was the newest update, don't see a 7.6.1.  if i use app on phone to change firmware, will cause any problems?

iphone shows connection to wifi/network, however new aiport utility app intermittently finds base station and intermittently connecting to internet which is the same as not connecting.  at times it searches forever for base station.  gives domain, dns server, router address but states connectivity as "disconnected".
