How many applications do you have running? You may want to quit some.
If you open up Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) you may get a hint as to what application is causing it.
Are you running anti-virus software by any chance? That's involved in an inordinately high percentage of slowdowns.

First - a major apology for my failure to respond and thank you for your comprehensive reponse, Linc. There are lots of reasons but no excuses - I truly am sorry.
I'll keep this short.
I have now had my hard drive replaced - and all my problems have disappeared!
You were 'right on the nail'! 10/10
Most folk, including AppleCare, didn't believe me when I put forward a failing disc as a reason for my spinning beachballs. I shall come back here and ask for your advice again if necessary!
Very many thanks for your help, Linc!

I appreciate your comment, William. Thank you.
I do understand that having too many applications running slows down a machine.
I have run an AV on this machine, but am not doing so right now.
As you'll note, replacing my hard drive has solved all my problems.
Kudos to Linc Davis!
