Dont be so quick to criticise and check your facts. If you search the forum you will see that this has been mentioned many times. Also in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268 you will see that SMS messaging is required to activate imessage. Just read under the heading "additional information" a quick search of google will also tell you this. Looking at http://bit.ly/VKoWN1 and read the fourth hit

Why dont you read http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/the-complete-guide-to-facetim e-imessage-set-up-use-and-troubleshooting/

Under the hood, the iPhone actually uses hidden SMS messages to register your phone number with the FaceTime and iMessage networks; depending on your carrier, these SMS messages will either be free or disclosed as charged against your SMS plan. On initial setup, the iPhone transmits an SMS message to Apple’s servers and awaits a confirmation message back to confirm that the phone number has successfully been registered. This procedure allows FaceTime and iMessage to be seamlessly configured to use your phone number with no user intervention required while also authenticating your phone number. Note that this registration process is the only way that a phone number can be assigned to FaceTime or iMessage.

That should enlighten you

Stubborn? Nah, just not up on all-things Aussie. I had no idea you poor sods had to text the UK just to kick start iMessage. Touche, I have been corrected.

So is this only to activate iMessage? If so, why would it work and then quit working as it did for the first two posters. Surely you don't need an international text plan to support each iMessage, please tell me Apple hasn't screwed you that badly!

International SMS required elsewhere to (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3376038?start=255&tstart=0) it depends on where you are and what server apple uses to activate. It only needs to be done once unless of course reset the phone or turn iMessage off and back on. If you want to activate iMessage on wifi iPad with no cellular then the verification process is done by email because of course no SMS can be sent by such an iPad.
