SuperDrive Installation Disks Rejection

I have a 2010 27" iMac just back from an Apple Authorized Service Provider. It's got a completely fresh install of OSX 10.7 but the Superdrive is acting weird.

In an attempt to install CS4 Production Premium, it failed to mount disk 1. It spins up a few times and then spits the disk out.

I tried an audio cd, and it played no problem.

I tried a regular DVD movie, and it played no problem.

Then I put in disk 2 of CS4 PP, and while it can't install or do anything without disk 1, I can hear that it makes noises like it's being read and I can see that it's recognised in Disk Utility.

I then inserted the Applications Install DVD and it wouldn't mount, spun up a few times and then spat the disk out, exactly like the CS4 PP disk 1.

All disks have been tested on another iMac running Mountain Lion and there's no problem with them.

It appears that the only disks having problems are installation disks, and to be honest, it seems more like a software/OS glitch than a problem with the actual drive.

Any help appreciated.

Please contact the AASP that did the work, they warranty their work so you really should be in touch with them.

They didn't use the Superdrive at all as they install things via usb, so how can I get them to admit responsibility? Surely their warranty work only covers the HD they installed for the Hard Drive Replacement Program?

You can try some basics such as doing SMC and PRAM resets. If you don't know how please click

for detailed instructions. If those don't work, then try restarting in Safe Mode.

Tried the SMC and PRAM resets already, but I hadn't thought to boot in Safe Mode.

However, I just did so and it made no difference it seems.

I hate the thought of driving a 90 minute round trip to drop it off at the AASP again.

Repeat the SMC and PRAM resets per the instructions several times each, sometimes they don't always work on the first attempt.

It doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Tried to set up a new user, but that hasn't worked. 😟

Well good luck then at the AASP, not sure why it is having issues. If you still have AppleCare coverage then give them a call, if not then wellllll now you know why it's a good idea.

Frustrating, but I appreciate the help.

I came across this thread which suggested deleting files in the Preferences folder resolved a similar issue, but the specified files don't seem to be in my Preferences folder. However, in that thread it seems like all disks are being rejecting.

What's the part number for the optical drive in a 2010 iMac? Is it SUPER 846CA?
