Having problems getting photos off iPhone so new iOS can be downloaded

I have a 16gb iPhone 4S and there is no memory left. For some reason I cannot get any of the photos off the phone. When I am in iTunes and I go to the photos tab I do now have the "Sync from iPhoto's" checked because I do not want to want to add the photos from iPhoto on my computer. Also all of the albums are unchecked so they should not be syncing. I am backing up on the cloud and that seems not to be the problem.

Really stuck here because it says I have 11.6 gb of photos on the phone and I really need to get most of it off so I can get all the updates I am missing.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Open iPhoto and import the photos from the phone to iPhoto, just as you would with any other digital camera. iTunes is not used to take photos off of the phone. Only to put them on the phone.
