Why does tv need to stay on to listen to music on apple tv?

While streaming music from imac to apple tv 3 to receiver, why do I need the tv on? I'd prefer to have my flat screen off while I listen to music. As soon as I turn the tv off, receiver says "no signal". Is there a way to do this?

Apple tv is connected to HDMI in on receiver not through the tv.

Thanks

Paul

Clearly not the case since turning off the TV is shutting off the connection. In any event, ATV is working. The issue is with the setup. You probalby need to post the question is a fourm that supports your receiver. Even if you could get this to work you would still need the TV to be able to control the music. i.e. Select other songs, playlists, pause, stop, etc.
