Q: Ethernet Port

My Ethernet port has stopped working. We had some strong winds and my ethernet cable spans accross from a shed to the house. I have my laptop plugged in and it works fine, but when i plug my ethernet cable (cat5e) in, it says the network cable is unplugged.

I ran an AHT and nothing came up as an error, i have done a PRAM reset also.

ANY IDEAS?

I have an imac 24 in early 2009 with 4gb RAM running 10.5.8

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Ethernet didn't work in safe mode. The cable works when I plug a laptop into it, so I know there is nothing wrong with that.

The cable is 30 meters long so it's not so easy to replace and check. But because it works on the laptop. I haven't bothered taking the computer to the modem. It's dsl with a modem the light is off when I plug it in to the port. But it occasionally works (Ethernet) so I'm not 100% convinced the port is blown.

OK, good work, not likely the cable then.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the Ethernet Tab, set it to Manually & try 10BaseT half Duplex, see if that connects after a reboot, then try Full Duplex.

Ok, so i put it on 10BaseT/UTP full duplex (i was working from my memory so i didnt try half first) and it immediately hooked up and worked i didnt even need to reboot!

    What did that do?

Do i still need to try half duplex?

    THANKS!!

    Great news, good work, thanks!

No need to try 10 BaseT Half Duplex now, we were just working our way up to see if slowest worked 1st.

We slowed the Ethernet down to 1/10th it's normal speed, & when that works for me in the past, it was a damaged but not dead Ethernet card/port/cable.

You might try 100 BaseT Half Duplex. Half Duplex is roughly haalf the speed of Full Duplex, as it only reads or writes at one time, Full Duplex does both at a time.

Sounds like it is marginal anyway.

Ok. So that solution didn't last long!

A day after using it, the ethernet stopped again, but the wifi seems to be working fine and i haven't had a problem with it. . .

    Any other great ideas?
