All of a sudden I cannot open any application or folder from the desktop or application folder by double clicking it. I can right click it and then press open and it works. Someone suggested I try starting up in the safe mode using disk utility and use Repair Disk Permissions but this did not help. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Applications are never supposed to be on the desktop. They are all supposed to be placed inside the HD > Applications folder. Apps on the desktop never update/upgrade, and generally don't work right.

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-A to open the Applications folder. Double-click one of the built-in applications, such as TextEdit. What happens?
As I stated in the original entry the problem shows up in both the desktop and the App. Folder so double clicking any thing in the folder does nothing.
If you have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

I (by mistake) hit the "This solved my problem" button but that was only partially true, it gave me some insight into the desktop issue, but I have the same problem in the Application Folder and both the desktop and the App Folder problem started at the same time.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Are you using a wireless mouse? Maybe it needs to batteries?
Have you checked the settings on your Mouse in System Preferences?
